Tony Daniel interview (FEB 09)

height=Tony Daniel is the creator of The Tenth and the popular artist of such books as Teen Titans and Batman. He's both the writing and drawing DC's upcoming Batman: Battle For the Cowl. Westfield's Roger Ash recently contacted Daniel to learn more about the book.

Westfield: What can readers look forward to in Batman: Battle For The Cowl? Any story hints you can drop?

Tony Daniel: I think readers can look forward to an exciting and action-packed ride. There are many characters involved in the back-story, but the story centers around the three Robins; Dick, Tim, and Jason. It sounds like a simple story, but there's a lot of story elements taking place beyond who gets to wear the cowl.

Westfield: You're both writing and drawing the book. Do you enjoy doing both roles?

Daniel: Yes, I love being in control of the both the story and art. It's a lot of extra work, but well worth it. I'm trying to make the best of this opportunity. Not many people get put in this position, on such an icon like Batman, so I'm working harder than ever before to make this a good read.

Westfield: Looking at the solicitation for the book, there are a darn lot of characters in it. As an artist, is it fun drawing them all? As a writer, how difficult is it coordinating them all?

height=Daniel: There's a lot of characters, but they're not all in the same place at the same time either. There's groupings, for instance, teams that we'll see in action, helping get control of Gotham City. I haven't had much difficulty with the coordinating since those characters play a peripheral role to the main story and characters. So we have our stars and then the co-stars basically.

Westfield: How much does this crossover with other books? Can it be read on its own?

Daniel: The other books take my lead with certain story points, and they reflect some of the circumstances that I start here in Battle For The Cowl. It can be read on its own, but I think people will want to see the other books just to see how the elements evolve.

Westfield: Are there any other projects you're working on that you'd like to mention?

Daniel: My hands are full at the moment. I'm racing to stay on schedule because I'm swinging back on to Batman when this is all over.

Westfield: Any closing comments?

Daniel: Yes. For readers who'd like to see behind the scenes elements and art from the Battle for the Cowl, check out my blog, http://www.tonydaniel.blogspot.com.
