First off, I have to laugh about DC’s new Legion of Super-Heroes title already shipping late with #2 (out this week). As a former LSH editor, I know how easy that is to do, with the dozens of main characters and various ongoing storylines. But I know it will probably be a great read and also worth the wait! Especially with writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Ryan Sook moving forward with a storyline that appears to connect both the 20th and 30th centuries.

Doomsday Clock #12

Doomsday Clock #12

Another eagerly anticipated (which is the polite way to say months late, in this case) DC title this week is Doomsday Clock #12, written by Geoff Johns and art by Gary Frank. The cover (with the bloody Superman shield) is causing all kinds of discussion. I have to admit that I’m behind on reading this (on purpose — I frequently like to “save up” the last few issues of interesting series, so I can catch all the details of how the series will wrap up). So, I’ll be binge-reading this starting later today!

Suicide Squad #1

Suicide Squad #1

Another DC Guilty Pleasure for me is Suicide Squad #1. I’ve lost track of how many times this series has stopped and re-started over the decades, but I’m always happy to see it return. I’m not exactly sure why I’m attracted to a series which star mostly villains (and frequently kills off many of them!), but I’m looking forward to seeing what writer Tom Taylor and artist Bruno Redondo can do with all these reprobates! The fun starts with the cover by Ivan Reis and Joe Prado, which features the Squad charging out of the cover and Harley promising that “By the end of this issue… Half of this team will be DEAD!” (You just gotta admire that kind of positive thinking!)

MARVEL COMICS

Revenge of Cosmic Ghost Rider #1

Revenge of Cosmic Ghost Rider #1

Meanwhile over at Marvel, they’re relaunching the Cosmic Ghost Rider in a new five-issue limited series called Revenge of Cosmic Ghost Rider #1. This is not a series that I normally read, so the last 15 minutes or so that I took to catch up with the character on Wikipedia has left me with a lot fewer braincells than usual. (And much of the regular audience also as well, I suspect.) I think this series is supposed to be funny. (They mess around with the origins of the Marvel Universe itself.) This is written by Dennis “Hopeless” Hallum (and that’s a pretty cool nickname!) with art by Scott Hepburn. So, if you’re into cosmic crime syndicates and rogue hitchhikers from Earth named Cammi — this is the title for you! I’m hoping that I’m not spoiling the appearance of the future Frank Castle… I love his tiny little white hamburgers… Oh wait, was that somebody else?

The 2099 universe has now been designated as Earth-928 and alternatively dubbed as Earth-616 circa 2099. Kill me now. Please…

History of the Marvel Universe #6

History of the Marvel Universe #6

And finally (no, not literally), I’ll be sad to see the History of the Marvel Universe end with issue #6, mostly because I love these “behind the history” titles, and writer Mark Waid and artist Javier Rodriguez were just the guys to pull it off successfully. If you haven’t been reading/collecting this, make sure check out the “sure to be coming soon” collected edition of History of the Marvel Universe — so it will all be in one volume for easy Marvel history Deep Dives!

ARCHIE COMICS

Katy Keene

Katy Keene

Archie Comics’ Katy Keene TV series is set to premiere February 6, 2020, on The CW. Besides actress Lucy Hale portraying Katy Keene, other Archie characters that will appear on the series include Josie McCoy (played by Ashleigh Murray), reprising that role on this new series (and also making the “Archieverse” more detailed and diverse). Notably, both shows are already working toward a crossover between the Riverdale and Katy Keene series. Other Archie characters that will appear on Katy Keene include: Jorge/Ginger Lopez, Pepper Smith, Alexandra Cabot, Alexander Cabot, boxer K.O. Kelly, and Gloria Grandbilt! I’m sure we’ll learn a lot more about Katy Keene by the series premiere in February of next year.

Katy Keene's also coming back to comics in Archie & Katy Keene #1
