Fifth Degree: Previews #259

Felix the Cat

by Josh Crawley

In case you missed it, last Wednesday we posted an interview by me with Athena Voltaire‘s Steve Bryant about his Kickstarter-funded business model, among other things. For my first real interview (not that I recall ever doing a fake interview), it’s not too shabby.

In highly-related news, an Athena Voltaire Kickstarter campaign update (unless another pledge comes in before I finish this column): 84% funded 18 days in. That’s awesome! Remember: if Steve goes above that, it just means he can spend even more time making some kick-ass comic books!

And now, back to your regularly scheduled programming…

Superman #700

Trinity Anniversary
DC somehow finagled their publishing schedule so that their Big 3 characters all have Anniversary Issues the same month – so look for Superman #700, Batman #700, and Wonder Woman #600. All of these are 56-page comics with several creators pitching in, and all three promise major changes in creative direction as well. Both Superman and Wonder Woman feature the first work on the characters by recently new-to-DC superstar writer J. Michael Straczynski.

Previews Issue 256 Recommendations!

Chobits Omnibus Vol. 2

by Miles “OKPank” Perzewski

Every month comes a time that I like to flip though the pages of the newest Previews and figure out what to I’d like to order. I love coming across new items I’ve not even heard of yet and maybe catching a glance with a picture if included. If you need something new or would you like a good list of recommendations that I believe all could enjoy, then look no further for my picks of the month. And remember, ordering through Westfield saves you money off each item, making it so you can splurge on that decedent Grilled Salmon with Lemon Dill Sauce at that fancy restaurant near you!

Blackest Night: The Flash

by KC Carlson

We’re entering into that time of year where the pickings are slim for exciting new products. Most all of the cool new stuff for year-end holiday sales has already been solicited in the last couple of months. Long-standing sales wisdom says that people don’t buy for themselves during December, and nobody buys anything in January (and maybe February) since most folks overspent the holidays and are scrambling to pay off those bills. So the conventional wisdom for publishers is not to release anything too exciting. This is not just true for comics, but for most of pop culture. You’d be hard pressed to find many blockbuster CDs or novels or new movies (except for Christmas Day releases). New TV virtually disappears for much of December and early January, giving way to holiday programming – old and new – and end-of-season Bowl Games. I personally think the conventional wisdom is crazy – it’s actually the perfect time to sneak something cool out there when it doesn’t get buried by a dozen different similar things!

So let’s see what we can find this month…

Roger’s Comic Ramblings: Random thoughts

Roger with the great Nick Cardy

by Roger Ash

Things are pretty busy for me here at Westfield. We put the latest Worlds of Westfield to bed on Monday (unfortunately it likes to stay up late) and we’re hard at work to get the Westfield Web Site updated tomorrow with new product. That means two things for sure for me: stress and sleep deprivation. And when that happens, it can only mean that my already warped thought processes get even stranger. Take a trip with me inside my mind. Remember to stay on the path and wipe you feet on the way out.
