History of the Marvel Universe #1

History of the Marvel Universe #1

History of the Marvel Universe #1 (of 6) – Ever read Marv Wolfman and George Perez’ History of the DC Universe from back in 1986? It was kind of a post-Crisis on Infinite Earths retelling (updating) of the DCU after the mega event. I’ve always been a sucker for these kinds of books, mainly because of the scope and amount of characters involved. Nice artwork helps too! Now, writer Mark Waid and artists Javier Rodriguez and Alvaro Lopez have taken the challenge to create the definitive history of the Marvel Universe. A daunting task indeed! I guess my biggest question is how they’re going to tell a story that “covers every significant event and provides fresh looks at the origins of every fan’s favorite Marvel stories” in just a 6-issue miniseries! But, I’m looking forward to it and willing to give them the benefit of the doubt – and I hope you do too.

Daredevil By Chip Zdarsky Vol. 1: To Know Fear TP

Daredevil By Chip Zdarsky Vol. 1: To Know Fear TP

Daredevil By Chip Zdarsky Vol. 1: To Know Fear TP – I wouldn’t call myself a huge Daredevil fan, but I’ve enjoyed certain runs of the character over the years (and, of course, the Netflix series). Stan Lee and Gene Colan’s long run on the title first attracted me to the character and, more recently, I devoured the stints by Frank Miller, Brian Michael Bendis, and Ed Brubaker. Yes, there’s been other writers over the years but I usually got a little bored and dropped DD just ’cause, hey, you can’t read everything! You can TRY! However, the current chapter in the saga of Matt Murdock has gotten the juices flowing again and every issue by Chip Zdarskky has been the first comic I read of the week it comes out. Something about it seems so fresh and yet so familiar at the same time and that’s a rare thing in any medium.

Silly Symphonies Vol. 4: The Complete Comics 1942-1945

Silly Symphonies Vol. 4: The Complete Comics 1942-1945

There have been some excellent collections of classic Disney material recently. A personal favorite is The Library of American Comics/IDW’s complete collection of the Silly Symphonies newspaper strips. These strips have rarely been reprinted (the major exception being the Donald Duck comics) and it’s the first time they’ve been collected in their entirety. The series comes to its conclusion with Silly Symphonies Vol. 4: The Complete Comics 1942-1945. This final volume collects an adaptation of Bambi, strips starring José Carioca and Panchito from The Three Caballeros, and more. If you’re a Disney fan or a fan of comic strips, this volume should be on your shelf.

Phantoms in the Attic

Phantoms in the Attic

I enjoy the work of Richard Sala, whose art and stories are a wonderful mix of mystery and monsters. You may have encountered his work in The Chuckling Whatsit, Violenzia, In a Glass Grotesquely, and more. Now Fantagraphics is releasing Phantoms in the Attic, a limited edition collection of drawings, watercolors, and more selected by Sala himself. This should be a gorgeously gruesome volume!

George Herriman's Krazy Kat: The Complete Color Sundays 1935-1944

George Herriman’s Krazy Kat: The Complete Color Sundays 1935-1944

George Herriman’s Krazy Kat: The Complete Color Sundays 1935-1944 is a massive (over 600 pages) hardcover collection of the beautiful and at times surreal adventures of Krazy Kat and Ignatz. This is considered one of the greatest strips among all of newspaper strips in the last 100 years and the color Sunday strips are a sight to behold. You can spend hours studying these strips as there is so much going on in such a deceptively simplistic style. I find it often takes multiple readings of these strips to fully understand just what Herriman was doing. A truly one of a kind strip that will entertain you for years! Oversized (11 x 17) and published by Taschen America.

Zombillenium Vol. 4: Air Girl HC

Zombillenium Vol. 4: Air Girl HC

Zombillenium Vol. 4: Air Girl HC is the newest volume in this excellent series by one of my favorite creators, Frenchman Arthur de Pins (March of the Crabs). This is a charming story about the Zombillenium, an amusement park that only hires monsters, including vampires, werewolves, and other creatures. With this volume the Zombillenium is as popular as ever, and with this new found popularity they decide to have a witch’s Sabbath! There is also a side story of a monster underground railroad! These stories do read better if you have read all of the volumes in sequence and luckily you can get the first three volumes along with this new one. Beautiful art accompanies some of the best storytelling out there. A great read for everyone. From the fine folks at NBM!
