James Robinson is known to comic fans for his work on Starman, Scarlet Witch, JSA: The Golden Age, Fantastic Four, and many other series. Now, he presents a romance comic in Dynamite’s Grand Passion. He tells Westfield’s Roger Ash more about this upcoming series.

Westfield: What is the genesis of Grand Passion?

James Robinson: It all began with Nick [Barrucci] wanting me to do something for Dynamite. We’d talked about it for a good while before I came to him with the idea of doing a romance book, because that comics genre had gone out of style, and I thought it would be fun to try. However, me being me, it soon evolved into a sort of romance, crime, black humor creation it ultimately became.

Westfield: What can you tell us about the two main characters?

Robinson: Doc is a cop. He’s come to the small town where the action takes place after a tragedy in his life. He’s a good man. Honest.

Mabel is a career criminal who’s been robbing banks all over the country. She’s funny in the face of danger. Fearless. And she has a thieve’s honesty or code that she abides by and which ultimately causes her to become a part of Doc’s life.

Westfield: What is the appeal for you of doing a romance comic?

Robinson: As much as it is a romance comic, it’s just not done much anymore. At least not by Dynamite. I thought it would be fun to try and do a comic about Love. No fighting or action, just love and passion. But as I said before, me being me, it soon added action and gun-fighting to the love and passion. I enjoy writing their sort of stuff actually — the romance aspect and actually if you looked at my body of work I’ve never shied away from passion of the heart. Starman, for example, has quite a good amount of love and passion. So there.

Westfield: You’re working with artist Tom Feister on Grand Passion. What can you say about your collaboration?

Robinson: It been great. I’m so excited for everyone to see Tom’s wonderful work. It’s a beautiful clean style, with stark shadows and contrast. Perfect for this type of story. It’s fantastic seeing how he’s turned my script into the moody, sexy small-town world.

Westfield: Any closing comments?

Robinson: Just to add, that this book is for you, if you enjoy the work of Jim Thompson and Elmore Leonard. Maybe the Coen Brothers too, in terms of the black comedy they add to even their darkest stories. Or simply if you like violent, sexy, romantic crime fiction. It’s definitely a bit of a departure for me and I’m excited for everything to see it.
