Luna Brothers interview

(WoW AUG 07)

Jonathan and Joshua Luna, better known has the Luna Brothers, are the popular creators of Image's Girls and Ultra. Jonathan was also the artist on Marvel's Spider-Woman: Origin. This month, their latest book, The Sword, debuts from Image. Westfield's Roger Ash recently contacted the brothers to learn more about this series.

Westfield: What can you tell us about the genesis of The Sword?

Jonathan Luna: The Sword is a story we came up with around two years ago. Over the past years, it always kept coming up, so we knew we had to do it after Girls.

Westfield: What can you tell us about the series? Who are the main characters?

Joshua Luna: The story is basically about power - the ways people utilize it, and the lengths people take to possess it. Can a weapon, which is basically built for destruction, be used for good? Is murder ever justifiable? These are classic themes we've always wanted to explore and build a story upon.

We don't want to give too much away, but as most people have already guessed The Sword is indeed about a sword. A very unique sword. Dara, our protagonist, is a relatively typical twenty year old college student who becomes the unlikely bearer of the weapon. Throughout the story, we're going to show what she does with this instrument and how it affects her on a physical and emotional level.

Jonathan: Dara's father is a main character, as well as three powerful strangers that come into her life.

Westfield: Your stories have all featured women in prominent roles. Why is that?

Jonathan:There are a number of reasons. The obvious one is that women are beautiful. Second, women tend to have a wider range of emotions. Third, people don't expect women to do amazing things. We like women that kick ass.

Westfield: How do you two work together? What's you collaboration process like?

Joshua: For each series, we go through the overall story together, ironing out the plot points while still leaving wiggle room for myself when I write the scripts. After I finish a script, I make thumbnails of each page and Jon then handles the art (pencils, ink, colors). After he's done, I letter it.

Westfield: Are there any other projects you're working on that you'd like to mention?

Jonathan: We are slowly working on some other things, but we'll talk about them when the time is right. But most of our time is dedicated to The Sword.

Westfield: Any closing comments?

Joshua: This is a story we're really excited about, and we can't wait for everyone to check it out.
