Dave Gibbons Interview
|
(JUL 06 WoW) In his career in comics, Dave Gibbons has illustrated DC's Watchmen, Dark Horse's Martha Washington, wrote & drew DC/Vertigo's The Originals, and he recently wrote DC's Rann/Thanagar War and Green Lantern Corps: Recharge. Now, he returns to write the ongoing Green Lantern Corps title. Westfield's Roger Ash recently contacted him to learn more. |
|
Westfield: What appealed to you about the Green Lantern Corps book? Dave Gibbons: I've always liked the concept, with the opportunity for far-flung SF adventures and a cast of weird and wonderful characters. It was one of the first things I drew when I started in American comics, so I have a soft spot for it, too. I always regretted that I didn't get to do more outer space stuff when I drew Hal Jordan for a while, so it's good to redress that. Westfield: What can you tell us about the new series? What can people look forward to?
Westfield: Will you be focusing more on individuals within the Corps or the Corps as a group? Gibbons: Guy is our lead character and plays a big part in the stories. As troubleshooter, he tends to get assigned to the interesting areas. In addition, I want to develop the new Lanterns we met in Recharge and to involve the veterans, too. The relationships between the characters is proving a lot of fun to write and it's that interaction which distinguishes the Corps from the other Green Lantern books. Westfield: As an artist, you must have a vision in your head of how you expect a page to look. How much direction do you give Patrick and how much do you leave up to him?
Westfield: Are there any other projects you're working on you'd like to mention? Gibbons: Thunderbolt Jaxon is currently coming out from WildStorm. It's part of the Albion stable of characters and is drawn by my longtime collaborator John Higgins. It's a whole different thing than the Corps , being set in England and featuring kids, gangsters and Norse gods. I'm also going to be drawing arcs of the Corps ongoing series, as well as writing it. I'm also hoping to finish the Martha Washington series that Frank Miller and I have had out at intervals over the past decade. A script is written and I just need to draw it! |
