Geoff Johns Interview

Geoff Johns currently writes - and co-writes - such books as DC's Flash, JSA, and Hawkman, and Marvel's Morlocks. This month, he takes over the writing duties on Marvel? Avengers. Worlds of Westfield Content Editor Roger Ash recently contacted Johns to find out more about his work on Avengers

Westfield: You're coming on Avengers following a long, popular run by Kurt Busiek. Do you find this at all intimidating and what do you think will distinguish your run on Avengers from what's come before?

Geoff Johns: I don't know what will distinguish it - I will be focusing on character interaction, and there will be a few key relationships that will be central in my run. As far as being intimidated - of course, but I can't let that stop me!

Westfield: What can you tell us about what you have planned for the Avengers?

Johns: Not much. I want to keep everything pretty close to the vest.

Avengers #57Westfield: How is your approach to the Avengers different or similar to your approach to the JSA?

Johns: JSA's theme is legacy, about carrying on tradition. The Avengers are much more in the spotlight, a beacon to the World.

Westfield: You're also doing an Avengers Icons: The Vision mini-series and the Thing: Freakshow mini-series. What can you tell us about these projects?

Johns: Not much - I want to keep the plots under wraps. They are in continuity and very character oriented. The Vision series will be much different than what you might expect.

Westfield: You write solo as well as part of a team. How is your experience writing solo different from writing as part of a team?

Johns: I enjoy working with other people, and other writers. I learn from working with other writers, and you can't bring your ego to the table. It's fun to talk stories and characters. Writing solo is fun as well, you get inside your own head and your own little universe.

Westfield: Since we've spent some time on your upcoming Marvel projects, do you have anything you'd like to tell us about what's on the way in the books you write for DC?

Johns: The Flash - We're in the middle of Crossfire right now, and the Flash's life will be taking a pretty big turn in the coming months ahead. Grodd is on the way too.

JSA - Wrapping up Stealing Thunder we'll have some character focused issues on the newer members of the JSA before leading into our next two story arcs, one focusing on Dr. Fate.

Hawkman - Green Arrow comes by to make trouble, James Robinson is writing our first Lives Past solo and then the Atom and Dr. Fate will make appearances soon after.

JLA/JSA - A 100 page hardcover co-written with David Goyer. Present day teams come together to combat... something. Carlos Pacheco is drawing and - really - that's more than enough to get you to check it out!

Westfield: Do you have any other upcoming projects you'd like to mention?

Johns: That's it for now.

Westfield: Any closing comments?

Johns: Thanks for reading!
