Markley’s Fevered Brain: Random Thoughts and Reviews

Jonah Hex #62

by Wayne Markley

For a change of pace, I am going to look at a number of ongoing monthly books that I enjoy instead of my traditional look at collections or trades. I am going to just point out some random titles with short commentary about each title without going into depth, but I will try and point out if there are collections available of the storylines I am writing about. I have found in the modern era of comic storytelling, a book may turn from rubbish to great on a dime with a new creator or a new direction. When this is the case, I will try and guide you towards the “better” material vs. the bad material. Away we go!

For Your Consideration: Marvel’s Thor by Walter Simonson Omnibus

Thor By Walter Simonson Omnibus

by Robert Greenberger

Marvel’s Omnibus program has generated several worthy collections of material at affordable prices given the sheer volume of material you get between the covers. While most of these have come from the dawn of the Marvel Age, their March release comes from the 1980s and this run of Thor is perhaps one of the best bodies of work produced in modern times.

Fifth Degree: Publisher Bait and Switch

American Vampire #6

by Josh Crawley

Picture the scene: you walk into the comic book store, scan the racks, and find a comic book — aside from the entertainment provided — that’s a pleasing little artifact. Maybe it has extra pages, or even just a cover paper stock you really, really like.

Fast forward a month, maybe two, or maybe just two weeks (this is comics, where any one of those could be on-time or late). You walk into the store and look for the second artifact in your collection. Once found, it doesn’t have quite the same luster as the first. After purchasing your little treasure and getting it home, you realize the true difference: inexplicably, the cover stock has changed. (No, I’m not going to say you have a disorder and before someone — correctly or not — diagnoses me with one, bear with me.)

10 THINGS I LIKE ABOUT NOVEMBER ’10 COMICS (and a couple I’m not so crazy about).

New Avengers #6
by KC Carlson

Well, Christmas is over! Hope you had a great holiday season!

Of course, in the real world, the holidays are still several months away! But in the wacky world of comic book advance ordering, pretty much all of the industry’s major wares have already been offered up. Since the last three months have been SO packed with goodness, this month’s offerings pale a bit in comparison. Still, there’s plenty of great stuff if you dig around a bit, so here are my picks, along with a bit of commentary here and there since I haven’t had much chance to talk about current comics lately. On to it…

Thor the Mighty Avenger #4

Have you ever noticed how months, if not a year, before a comic book related movie comes out there’s a plethora of new comic books featuring that character? You haven’t?! Well, if you’ll allow me explain what I’m talking about…

DC Comics Year by Year

by KC Carlson

As mentioned briefly last month, we are now at that point in the calendar year where publishers begin showing off their special books for the coming holiday season. So, keep in mind that many of the items we’re talking about here may not actually ship until October or November. Also, with the high cover price of some of the items listed here, this might actually be more of a “Dear Santa…” idea list than anything else.
