A lot of outside factors — changes in distribution, new formats, creators wanting new outlets to express their creativity leading to new comics publishers, and an overriding feeling that comics as a medium was growing by quantum leaps — lead to this. 1986 was a particularly good year for comics, including Watchmen, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Maus, and many other memorable projects. It felt like a new Golden Age — but there was darkness brewing.

You know that feeling you get when you discover something really cool and exciting and you can’t wait to share it with everyone? That’s how I’ve been feeling recently. Let me tell you about my favorite corner of the Marvel Universe. You probably know about all the exciting stories that are going on in Avengers, X-Men, and Spider-Man, but are you familiar with what’s going on in the Cosmic Corner of the Marvel Universe? I’m talking specifically about Nova and Guardians of the Galaxy. Holy crap! These are great comics! Ahem. OK, I’ll try to conduct myself with a bit more decorum in the rest of the column, but excitement may get the better of me from time to time. I had heard rumblings on the internet about what great series these were and decided to find out for myself. I’m glad I did.

It’s time to do yet another one of these year-end lists with me yammering on and on about which comics I liked this year. But: Best? I’m not sure that I’m really qualified to say, since I read such a small percentage of everything published in any given year and I have this annoying tendency (at least in certain circles) to avoid anything even remotely “artsy”. Not that I don’t like art, but I don’t always know what I like, if you know what I mean.
