Fifth Degree: Random Link Blogging with Commentary

By Josh Crawley

While sometimes there are some noteworthy going-ons in the world of comics, there isn’t really all that much newsworthy. Combine that with my lack of anything else to ramble about this week and it looks like we’re going to be on an adventure of not-so-mythic proportions!

How it works: I’ll pretty much scan some comic book websites, sometimes click on links (and share them with you), and babble a bit about what I see and read!

But before I start (since it’s been lots of places before I got this idea), Scott Pilgrim’s six volumes have been printed in over one million copies total. That’s pretty awesome. Sidebar: I wonder how quick it would take digital sales to reach that number. Even more so, I wonder how it would look on a Kindle or a Nook.

Markley’s Fevered Brain: Scott Pilgrim Vs. the Movie Vs. the Books

Scott Pilgrim

by Wayne Markley

Before you read this blog, I must point out that it will have spoilers about both the Scott Pilgrim movie and the books. If you have not read the books or seen the movie, you might not want to read this blog yet. Wait a week or so till after you have read the books or seen the movie. Also, I am not the target audience for this film. It is aimed at 20/30’s something’s. That said, let’s have a look at the Scott Pilgrim event. If you are not aware, Scott Pilgrim is a six-volume graphic novel series from Oni Press about a slacker who lives in Toronto and is dating a high school girl until he meets Ramona Flowers, the girl of his dreams. The big problem is he must first defeat Ramona’s seven evil ex’s before he can be with her. Add to this his mix of eccentric friends, his ex-girlfriend who he is still not over him, and some odd metaphysical events, and it makes for a fun story.

Fifth Degree: McDuffie’s New Fantastic Four and O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim!

New Fantastic Four

by Josh Crawley

Before I get into things this week, I want to mention my friend Zack Kruse’s webcomic Mystery Solved. There’s an old guy with a twirly moustache and a pipe. There’s a new installment every Thursday! And there’re fairies!

————————————

Over the weekend I grabbed a handful of graphic novels to read at home after work. The first of those was Gravity: Big City Super Hero by Sean McKeever & Mike Norton. I liked the book, but in all honesty, there wasn’t enough for me. I wanted more of the fresh-out-of-high school kid from Wisconsin! (Sheboygan, to be exact. It’s pretty up there.) Not that McKeever & Norton are to blame. Sales didn’t warrant any more than the five issues published.

Imagine my surprise when i start reading the next book in my stack, Fantastic Four: The New Fantastic Four by Dwayne McDuffie & Paul Pelletier, and Gravity shows up!

Fifth Degree: Legion and Links

Life & Death of Ferro Lad

by Josh Crawley

For some reason the past few years, the winter season puts me in the mood to read Legion of Super-Heroes. While i don’t have a great number of Legion comics, my collection of them grows slowly every year. The past two years have been especially great for reprint collections, whether it’s the many Showcase Presents collections, An Eye for an Eye followed up by The More Things Change by Paul Levitz & Co., or the book I’m itching to get to soon, The Life & Death of Ferro Lad (as part of the DC Comics Classics Library hardcover line). If you’re interested in reading some L.o.S.H. yourself, 1,050 Years of the Future has a great sampling from many eras. (Normally I’d be torn about recommending Great Darkness Saga, due to the lack of a great introduction/set-up), but it’s out of print for some reason. My guess would be DC is waiting to make it an entry in the previously mentioned DC Comics Classics Library line, but at this point I wouldn’t hold my breath. After all, this is the company that has let Born to Run and Terminal Velocity (two AMAZING Wally West Flash stories by Mark Waid & Co.) go out of print.
