While I’m not a fan of He-Man getting top billing over any of the other Masters of the Universe, I’m SO JAZZED FOR THIS COMIC, YOU GUYS!!! This is the perfect type of celebration for the 30th(ish) anniversary of the MOTU franchise.

I’m heartbroken I don’t get to letter it, though.

~

That’s all anyone really needs this month, honestly… but if you really, really need some more suggestions this month…

~

Avatar: The Last Airbender - The Promise Part 3

Considering how quickly the first volume of this became unavailable — and for how long – I’d strongly recommend preordering this book as soon as humanly possible.

Also, FYI, Legend of Korra is AWESOME.

~

Alabaster: Wolves

Rachelle Rosenberg’s colors are so gorgeous with Steve Lieber’s black and white work. I could look at their collaborations for hours and hours on end!

Executive Assistant: Assassins

Did you know: Jordan Gunderson — who’s drawn comics for such publishers as Boom!, Zenescope, and now Aspen — is a Westfield Comics regular? Now you know, and knowing is half the battle! But the real question is: what’s the other half?

The other half is this: whether you buy the Joe Benitez cover or the Francisco cover, you should buy this comic!!! (Me, I’ll probably buy both.)

~

Prophecy

It’s written by one of my favorite living comic book writers, and it’s about the end of the world (something he knows a thing or 16 issues about).

~

Witchblade: Demon Reborn

Hot covers? Check. Talented writers? Check. Has a bonus reprint of a comic I may or may not have read years ago but am much more sure I never bought? This book is working out in my favor pretty quickly.

~

Scott Pilgrim Color Hardcover Volume 1: Precious Little Life

It’s probably been 8 years since I last read this story, and I’m really looking forward to seeing it in new, full color glory!!!

~

Finding Gossamyr

I’ve been looking forward to this gorgeously illustrated comic to continue ever since I got to see a preview of it months ago! If you’re going to a Free Comic Book Day celebration close to you — which you hopefully are — you can get started right away!

I haven’t had a chance to read the new X-O Manowar #1 that just shipped this week, but I have a pretty good feeling about this relaunch (or I’m really just hoping to see the relaunch of one of the best comics ever: Shadowman!!!).

They really missed a great joke by not calling this the Knight Rider Kit(t), but I’m just putting this here for my brother from another mother Jimmy P.S. Hayes, so I’ll let it slide.

by Josh Crawley

~

Before I get into the usual run down, I’d like to take a moment to share some great news: the podcast my friend John & I record — Doughnuts & Top Cow (@DTCPodcast) — was recently announced at Image Comic Expo as becoming the official podcast of Top Cow; by the fans & for the fans! In our inaugural episode, we chat with Ron Marz about Artifacts #14. We’d really appreciate it if you’d take a listen!

If you’re subscribed to the old feed, don’t worry: we’ll still continue to do a not-quite-as-frequent podcast available from Derek Coward’s great Comic Book Noise Family. We’re planning on doing fun stuff like commentaries for the Witchblade anime and TNT series while consuming beverages of a more mature nature.

Now? On with the show!

~

The Guild: Fawkes

The Guild: Fawkes

While I’m not much of a gamer, I really do enjoy The Guild. As I also enjoy Jamie McKelvie’s artwork, this really is quite a no-brainer. They really went all out on making this an issue I’d want to read, what with having covers by both Paul Duffield — whose Anna Mercury covers melt my soul — but the variant cover is by Emma Rios, whose work (most recently on Spider-Island Cloak & Dagger) has never failed to be enjoyable.

~

Usagi Yojimbo Vol. 26: Traitors of the Earth

Usagi Yojimbo Volume 26: Traitors of the Earth

I’m more than my fair share of behind on Usagi Yojimbo, and I learned something while helping a customer out this week: do not wait to pick these books up. Many of the volumes have gone out of print, and Dark Horse doesn’t seem in too much of a hurry to put them back into print, which is a shame…

Because unless this is the first thing you’ve ever read by me, you know I think Usagi Yojimbo is one of the ten best comics ever.

I’m a bit saddened that Ian Churchill isn’t using the style for this book that he used on his Marineman all-ages book. I think it’s a change of pace the New 52 could use from itself. Also, possibly a bit heretical, but I kind of wish Fairchild was using the codename Knockout, what with being a built redhead that made a first appearance in Superboy, and all of that jazz. Oh, and because Fairchild seems like a horrible codename.

A few other quick thoughts on New 52 books this month:

Batman and Robin #9

- I keep seeing how the Night of the Owls books continue the story, but I don’t recall seeing anything that mentions it beginning. Mind you, I don’t have an issue with this (and it very well may have been in a previous month). I actually like the idea quite a bit, unlike…

- I really wish instead of getting annuals, titles could just have an annual issue of the regular series that was along the lines of a regular issue with a bunch more material, especially if the regular monthly story is a crossover that leads into the annual. The more I think about it, the more I may want to punch whoever came up with the idea in the first place.

- Recently, Chris Butcher (of the Beguiling, in Toronto) questioned the logic of publishing trade paperbacks of New 52 books that have been cancelled due to low sales/ little to no market for the books. While I generally agree with Mr. Butcher, I also appreciate that DC is taking a chance on seeing if there is another market for these books in a different format.

~

If the amazing sell-outs of previous versions of this book haven’t led anyone to believe they need to preorder this book as soon as possible, I’m just going to start assuming that the people that are looking for it after it’s released don’t actually like comics.

Worst case scenario: flip it for a good 100% profit after you’ve had it sitting around for a few months.

The first part of a new story, so if you’ve been holding out waiting for a good chance to start reading, here’s another good time to start!

~

New Avengers

Forgive me if this seems like I’m expecting a bit much, but in my mind, if something really is “One of the most important chapters” in a certain story, it should be in that story’s main book a bit more prominently, or at least billed as expanding/revealing on that most important piece that was mentioned in the main story.

~

Marvel's The Avengers: The Avengers Initiative

Other than having a ridiculously awkward title, I’m not too impressed by the style of coloring used on Ron Lim’s artwork here (and believe me, I’ve seen plenty of Ron Lim artwork).

Does this book really need a good jumping on point (as I seem to recall the Point One books being when first announced) after only six issues have come out?

~

Daredevil

I sold five copies of this in softcover when it came out last year while we were still getting the new store up and running, and I was never able to get a reorder. I could have only imagined how it would do if I had more copies, but now I get to see it for real! Added bonus, it’s going to be a hardcover from Archaia, so it’s virtually guaranteed to be a great looking object aside from the already gorgeous art.

Considering the ire that’s been raised recently by some groups concerning Kevin Keller, I can only imagine what will be unleashed when some close-minded people find out there’s a version of Archie that has had a baby with Valerie.

Oh noes, the humanity!!!

I’m kidding, by the way. You can tell by the fact that I typed “noes.”

Seriously, I applaud Archie for their open-minded, inclusive thinking & publishing of material that allows more people to relate to comics. Thank you.

I have a confession: I’m not a big Star Wars fan. The title of the book and the cover though, made enough of an impression on me that I’m pretty sure I need to read this miniseries.

Alabaster: Wolves

Another cover that grabbed my attention but it’s the artwork of Steve Lieber that will be bringing me back. While those stories are much more grounded in reality, Lieber illustrates the fantastical just as well!

Despite owning every issue of Behold the Devil, I have yet to read it. In this case, I don’t see that as a detriment as Behold the Devil was originally intended as a single, manga-inspired volume anyway. Now getting it in chronological order with all the other Hunter Rose material over the years (save for Batman/Grendel, which I wish could be put back into print) is going to be really interesting.

If Art Baltazar & Franco’s Tiny Titans has taught us anything, it’s “Aw yeah!” The second thing it’s taught us is that all ages comics can appeal to a wide variety of readers. One might even say they can appeal to readers of most all ages. And if their Young Justice has taught me anything, it’s that they can write a book with characters just as true — if not more so — to the title character as the “regular” DC title the character appears in.

Basically, I’m pretty sure this is the best Green Lantern title I’ll have read and will read in quite some time.

Part of me really wises IDW had released this in their treasury format. That aside, I really enjoyed the paper stock used for the recent Dungeons and Dragons 100-Page Spectacular — card stock cover and bright white paper, neither of which was glossy — and I’m really hoping this volume follows suit. Of course, I just enjoy the treatment they’ve been using for these 100-page spectaculars in general. There’s something nice about a fat saddle-stitched comic and the way it feels in my hand.

There was a lot more interesting stuff (or at least more I had something to say about it) than usual in the first section of Previews, so I’m going to stop for now, folks. Maybe I’ll have more next week; maybe not. In the meantime, good journey!

Two issues in, and this title is still selling better than many New 52 titles, but that’s not why I’d like to see this series continue with its current creative team (Paul Levitz, Marcus To, John Dell, Guillem March & the gang). I want it to continue as-is because I’m really enjoying this comic (better than many of the New 52)!

Before I get into the thick of things this month, I wanted to point out a few inexpensive first issues (cover price of 1 United States Dollar; I realize the economy is still slogging really slowly) that the open-minded consumer should be sure to check out: The Strain #1 from Dark Horse features art by the amazing Mike Huddleston; Outcast #1 from BOOM!

While I am still enjoying this book post-relaunch, I’m not a big fan of David Finch’s covers so far. That being said, this is the first piece of art I’ve seen of the Batgirl costume that doesn’t really make me cringe. It’s still got a long way to go, but it’s getting better (and it would be great if it had a consistent look with the colors for her costume on her own book).

I’m a fan of Matt Fraction’s writing, but my event fatigue has fatigue at this point. What’s really drawing me to this book at this point is the gorgeous art by Terry & Rachel Dodson of the Red She-Hulk.

I love this book so much, I’d consider selling plasma while riding the bus to get this edition, which happens to be limited to this one printing! If you’re hesitant, I’d recommend buying it if only to resell later when it’s out of print, because once that happens I’m pretty sure it’ll go for some great money!

However, I’m not telling you to speculate on this book!!! This is me explicitly telling you not to speculate on this book.

I really enjoyed the first issue of this miniseries. The writing by Paul Levitz was enjoyable, and the art by Marcus To, John Dell, and the colorist whose name I don’t have handy looked great!

I know it’s frustrating waiting for this book to get on schedule, but it’s so great!!! The bright side? It’s pretty pimp the way Patience is wielding both the Spear of Destiny and the Witchblade in this cover.

I know nothing about this book, save that: 1) I hadn’t heard of it before now; 2) it’s probably pretty great since Humanoids is publishing it; and 3) I must own it since Terry Dodson did piles of gorgeous artwork for it. Word on “the street” (A.K.A. the Staff Picks spotlight in Previews) claims “Fantasy, science fiction, and erotica [are] all abound in Muse.” Doesn’t sound like something to pass up at all!

While a much less-hyped relaunch than DC’s New 52, this Ninja Turtles relaunch is by no means any less great (and is very possibly even better). IDW claims this stand alone story acts as a great jumping on point, and I don’t really have any basis to argue that, what with me trying to get you to buy it anyways! While I normally tend to wait for the trade paperback, issue 2 of this series had a nice few pages of Kevin Eastman’s layouts for Dan Duncan, so I’m actually tempted to start getting the regular issues (of which issues 1 and 2 have both been announced as going to a third printing).

Coincidentally enough, I’m actually wearing a t-shirt with this artwork on it right now (though it also has Lion-O and the vintage logo, is bright orange, and has been worn so much it looks like a vintage 80s tee despite not even being ten years old). While you’re checking out ThunderCats tees, you can also show your allegiance to the Ever Living.

This comic is so much fun! If you’re a fan of talking dinosaurs, non-long-winded sciency technical jargon, and all around fun, you’re only doing a disservice to yourself by not checking it out.

I find it humorous that Ron Marz has barely left Witchblade when he then uses her in another book he’s writing; not that I’ve got a problem with that. It’ll also be nice to see Nelson Blake II, David Marquez & crew illustrate another lovely Top Cow lady!

While the colors of this cover look a little off, I’m going to assume it’s my monitor or the files Marvel supplied, because despite not being a big fan of Mike McKone, this cover looks amazing in print. I may be biased, though, as it’s colored by a friend of mine: the lovely Rachelle Rosenberg! Also? Sexy kissing!

I wouldn’t normally point something like this out, but for some reason a lion head on the chest seemed extra awesome this month. Also, it appears that this model can actually be broken into the component pieces — bomber, drills, bullet train, and lion — and that’s just too sweet to pass up!

I honestly don’t remember much about this Elseworlds story, save that it was enjoyable and had gorgeous art. If you missed it the first time around, I’d definitely recommend picking this up. It also makes an for an interesting “alternate history” companion piece to JSA The Liberty Files.

Sure, it’s Hellboy, Richard Corben, and an original hard cover graphic novel (which Dark Horse seems to do well with), but the important detail is Hellboy wrestling as a luchador!!! That’s like the peanut butter & apricot* preserves of comics.

I would also like to note that I’m pretty sure the page count for this volume must be much high than 50 pages, as the original 3 issue series would put the page count for this volume at least around 72 pages, if not closer to 90.

It been quite some time since I’ve been caught-up on reading the goings-on of the Buffyverse, but the tag team of Angel and Faith is one I will always root for. What really clinches the deal for me, though, is the stellar Rebekah Isaacs on art! Her most recent projects include DV8 with Brian Wood and Magus, published by 12 Gauge Comics.

I haven’t read or really seen much by Clamp in the past five years or so, but the artwork for this cover looks amazing, and it’s being released just months after being released (as a collection, I presume) in Japan, so I imagine this is what a lot of newer Clamp stuff may look like that we haven’t readily had a chance to see here in the States.

I really, really want to see a Dustin Nyugen art book from DC. I also wouldn’t mind having a better idea of who’s going to have work in this comic, but hopefully in the next few weeks we’ll get more details.
For now, all I’m going to say about the DC relaunch is this: I hope we still get new Gail Simone Secret Six in September and beyond. Simone’s writing on this book is especially twisted and amazing for a DCU book, and I think the relaunch could only benefit from this book and may be hampered without it.
I’m not going to lie: I only included this for my pal, Jimmy “P.S.” Hayes! If you enjoyed Kevin Smith’s take on the Green Hornet, I’d definitely recommend this book, as it’s from the same team! Also from Dynamite Entertainment this month is Warehouse 13 #1, a show I’m pretty fond of!

I’m about 98% sure my friend Tim would break someone’s kneecaps to get this mini bust. I don’t blame him! While I prefer Mockingbird’s contemporary design, this is still a great design brought to three dimensions well.

While I’m not a big fan of the movie designs, there’s something especially & adorably evil looking about Sinestro in Pop! vinyl form!
