While I’m not much of a gamer, I really do enjoy The Guild. As I also enjoy Jamie McKelvie’s artwork, this really is quite a no-brainer. They really went all out on making this an issue I’d want to read, what with having covers by both Paul Duffield — whose Anna Mercury covers melt my soul — but the variant cover is by Emma Rios, whose work (most recently on Spider-Island Cloak & Dagger) has never failed to be enjoyable.

I’m more than my fair share of behind on Usagi Yojimbo, and I learned something while helping a customer out this week: do not wait to pick these books up. Many of the volumes have gone out of print, and Dark Horse doesn’t seem in too much of a hurry to put them back into print, which is a shame…

Because unless this is the first thing you’ve ever read by me, you know I think Usagi Yojimbo is one of the ten best comics ever.

I’m a bit saddened that Ian Churchill isn’t using the style for this book that he used on his Marineman all-ages book. I think it’s a change of pace the New 52 could use from itself. Also, possibly a bit heretical, but I kind of wish Fairchild was using the codename Knockout, what with being a built redhead that made a first appearance in Superboy, and all of that jazz. Oh, and because Fairchild seems like a horrible codename.

A few other quick thoughts on New 52 books this month:

Batman and Robin #9

- I keep seeing how the Night of the Owls books continue the story, but I don’t recall seeing anything that mentions it beginning. Mind you, I don’t have an issue with this (and it very well may have been in a previous month). I actually like the idea quite a bit, unlike…

- I really wish instead of getting annuals, titles could just have an annual issue of the regular series that was along the lines of a regular issue with a bunch more material, especially if the regular monthly story is a crossover that leads into the annual. The more I think about it, the more I may want to punch whoever came up with the idea in the first place.

- Recently, Chris Butcher (of the Beguiling, in Toronto) questioned the logic of publishing trade paperbacks of New 52 books that have been cancelled due to low sales/ little to no market for the books. While I generally agree with Mr. Butcher, I also appreciate that DC is taking a chance on seeing if there is another market for these books in a different format.

Worst case scenario: flip it for a good 100% profit after you’ve had it sitting around for a few months.

I sold five copies of this in softcover when it came out last year while we were still getting the new store up and running, and I was never able to get a reorder. I could have only imagined how it would do if I had more copies, but now I get to see it for real! Added bonus, it’s going to be a hardcover from Archaia, so it’s virtually guaranteed to be a great looking object aside from the already gorgeous art.

I have a confession: I’m not a big Star Wars fan. The title of the book and the cover though, made enough of an impression on me that I’m pretty sure I need to read this miniseries.

Alabaster: Wolves

Alabaster: Wolves #1 (of 5)

Another cover that grabbed my attention but it’s the artwork of Steve Lieber that will be bringing me back. If you haven’t read Whiteout (and its sequel Whiteout: Melt, both written by Greg Rucka) nor Underground (with Jeff Parker), you’re missing out. While those stories are much more grounded in reality, Lieber illustrates the fantastical just as well!

Grendel Omnibus Volume 1

Despite owning every issue of Behold the Devil, I have yet to read it. In this case, I don’t see that as a detriment as Behold the Devil was originally intended as a single, manga-inspired volume anyway. Now getting it in chronological order with all the other Hunter Rose material over the years (save for Batman/Grendel, which I wish could be put back into print) is going to be really interesting.

(Oh, apparently these are the pistols of Eros. Cliff Chiang’s cover is so awesome; I still don’t mind not knowing why Eros would need pistols. However, it does annoy me that the primers in the shells seem to still be live.)

If Art Baltazar & Franco’s Tiny Titans has taught us anything, it’s “Aw yeah!” The second thing it’s taught us is that all ages comics can appeal to a wide variety of readers. One might even say they can appeal to readers of most all ages. And if their Young Justice has taught me anything, it’s that they can write a book with characters just as true — if not more so — to the title character as the “regular” DC title the character appears in.

Basically, I’m pretty sure this is the best Green Lantern title I’ll have read and will read in quite some time.

Part of me really wises IDW had released this in their treasury format. That aside, I really enjoyed the paper stock used for the recent Dungeons and Dragons 100-Page Spectacular — card stock cover and bright white paper, neither of which was glossy — and I’m really hoping this volume follows suit. Of course, I just enjoy the treatment they’ve been using for these 100-page spectaculars in general. There’s something nice about a fat saddle-stitched comic and the way it feels in my hand.

Before I get into the thick of things this month, I wanted to point out a few inexpensive first issues (cover price of 1 United States Dollar; I realize the economy is still slogging really slowly) that the open-minded consumer should be sure to check out: The Strain #1 from Dark Horse features art by the amazing Mike Huddleston; Outcast #1 from BOOM! Studios; and Lord of the Jungle from Dynamite Entertainment is an uncensored adaptation of Tarzan of the Apes. Now, on with the show!!!

It’s still got a long way to go, but it’s getting better (and it would be great if it had a consistent look with the colors for her costume on her own book).

I love this book so much, I’d consider selling plasma while riding the bus to get this edition, which happens to be limited to this one printing! If you’re hesitant, I’d recommend buying it if only to resell later when it’s out of print, because once that happens I’m pretty sure it’ll go for some great money!

However, I’m not telling you to speculate on this book!!! This is me explicitly telling you not to speculate on this book.

I know nothing about this book, save that: 1) I hadn’t heard of it before now; 2) it’s probably pretty great since Humanoids is publishing it; and 3) I must own it since Terry Dodson did piles of gorgeous artwork for it. Word on “the street” (A.K.A. the Staff Picks spotlight in Previews) claims “Fantasy, science fiction, and erotica [are] all abound in Muse.” Doesn’t sound like something to pass up at all!

Secret Avengers by Warren Ellis is the book I didn’t quite realize I’d wanted since I first read Planetary Volume 1. It’s been an interesting ten years, but I’m grateful to have this book on the shelves.

While a much less-hyped relaunch than DC’s New 52, this Ninja Turtles relaunch is by no means any less great (and is very possibly even better). IDW claims this stand alone story acts as a great jumping on point, and I don’t really have any basis to argue that, what with me trying to get you to buy it anyways! While I normally tend to wait for the trade paperback, issue 2 of this series had a nice few pages of Kevin Eastman’s layouts for Dan Duncan, so I’m actually tempted to start getting the regular issues (of which issues 1 and 2 have both been announced as going to a third printing). While you’re looking, don’t forget to take a peek at Micro Series #2: Michelangelo.

* Peanut butter & apricot preserves may not be as well known as peanut butter & jelly, but it’s easily just as tasty! (That’s fact, not opinion.)

Not only is this volume illustrated by Lee Bermejo, unlike Luthor and Joker (both also illustrated by Bermejo), this volume is also over-sized and written by Bermejo, as well. “All the better to see his amazing artwork,” the big bad wolf-disguised-as-granny said. Add in the cruel, cold setting of Gotham winter, and I’m positive this is going to be an amazing book.

I would also like to note that I’m pretty sure the page count for this volume must be much high than 50 pages, as the original 3 issue series would put the page count for this volume at least around 72 pages, if not closer to 90.

It been quite some time since I’ve been caught-up on reading the goings-on of the Buffyverse, but the tag team of Angel and Faith is one I will always root for. What really clinches the deal for me, though, is the stellar Rebekah Isaacs on art! Her most recent projects include DV8 with Brian Wood and Magus, published by 12 Gauge Comics.

Simone’s writing on this book is especially twisted and amazing for a DCU book, and I think the relaunch could only benefit from this book and may be hampered without it.
