Beauology 101 :Love/Hate And Being In The Middle

Beau Smith, Middleweight Champ Of Image Comics

by Beau Smith

Love/hate relationships are strange. For many years I had one with working conventions for the various publishers and companies that I worked for: Eclipse Comics, Image Comics, McFarlane Toys, Todd McFarlane Productions, and IDW Publishing. The Love/Hate part was working the booth.

Working the booth started with making sure everything got to the convention site, dealing with what didn’t, setting up the booth and displays, greetings and meetings through the convention, selling merchandise, doing panels, and tearing down the booth when the show was done.

Beauology 101: Behind The Curtain – Todd McFarlane

Beau Smith, Todd McFarlane & Terry Fitzgerald
by Beau Smith

As a part of my career continuation, in this installment of Beauology 101, I’m going to take you behind the curtain of my time working for Todd McFarlane. Eclipse Comics went bankrupt in 1994 and via an auction, it was soon bought by Todd McFarlane. (Let’s face it, the boy loves to buy things at auction.) By then I was already working for Todd. I began working part time for Todd during the last year of Eclipse Comics. You may or may not remember that at Eclipse we did the official licensed Pog set of “Spogz” for Todd. At the time, pogs were a hot collectible and there were many overseas fly-by-night companies making bootleg Spawn Pogs, so Eclipse owner, Dean Mullaney, asked me to approach Todd with the plan that we at Eclipse could make real pogs for him and knock off the knock offs. He agreed and the plan worked even though the pog craze soon wore off.
