Fifth Degree: MOTU Icons of Evil!
by Josh Crawley
Apparently I’m not a big enough of a talent in this industry to rate people wanting my opinion on DC Entertainment announcing their Executive team. That’s really okay, because I’m not sure I know how I feel about it yet anyways. There is some other cool DC news, though.
At New York Toy Fair last week Mattel announced they’re doing Masters of the Universe Classics (MOTUC) versus DC Universe Classics (DCUC) 2-packs, and unlike the MOTUC figures, they won’t be Matty Collector exclusives. They’ll be on Toys’R'Us shelves!
What’s even better? They come with comic book reprints of the DC comics! The set of He-Man versus Superman comes with DC Comics Presents #47, and Skeletor versus Lex Luthor comes with the preview that led into the 3 issues series drawn by the incomparable George Tuska! (Bikini Teela; aw yeah!) Sadly, their saturation date is April, so I won’t be able to defend the secrets of Castle Grayskull too soon.
In happier news, we have back issues of the great Robert (that Walking Dead, Invincible, Haunt, Battle Pope, Capes, Brit, Astounding Wolf-Man writer) Kirkman-penned Icons of Evil comics! These four issues are great versions of origins for some of the greatest Evil Warriors ever: Beast Man (with art by Tony Moore!), Mer-Man, Trap Jaw, and Tri-Klops!
I almost forgot to mention in all of my babbling why I’m so gung-ho on Masters of the Universe. They were the first comics I owned. Many people may know Mark Texeira from his distinctive run on Ghost Rider, but I know him from his great renderings of Man-E-Faces, Trap Jaw, Teela, and last but not least, pre-Filmation Sorceress! Throughout the runs of mini-comics, I also got to see the great work of Alfredo Alcala, read some fun Steven Grant stories, see some distinctive Stan Sakai lettering, and even see some inks by a young Bruce Timm, years before he worked on a little cartoon known as Batman: the Animated Series! He was working at Filmation, too!
Thanks to Masters of the Universe, I got into comics. I wouldn’t change that for everything in the world; good journey.
