My love affair with comics fluctuates. I’ve loved comics since I started reading them in the mid-to-late 1970s, and that’s one of the big reasons I’ve been a part of the comics industry for the past 20 plus years. However, as in any relationship, there are times I like comics more than at other times. Currently, I’m on a big upswing. I’m enjoying reading comics now more than I have in a long time. I’ve recently written about how much I’m enjoying the Marvel cosmic books, currently represented by The Thanos Imperative, and Jonathan Hickman’s writing on Fantastic Four (and in extremely cool news, he’ll be joined by artist Steve Epting onFF #583). So, I thought I’d share with you a couple other books that I’m loving right now – Boom’s Muppet Show and DC’s DC Universe Legacies.

January 11th, 2010 – Middleton, WI – Why just read THE ANCHOR, when you can be in the actual comic? Westfield Comics and BOOM! Studios are excited to announce a contest where one lucky fan will be drawn into an issue of THE ANCHOR, the hit new series by Phil Hester and Brian Churilla published by BOOM! Studios.
2009 has been a very interesting year in the comic book business. It has been a time of changes in both creative and the business ends of comics. There have been some excellent books and there have been a number of flops. Marvel and DC continued with their major epics (Dark Reign and Blackest Night) and superheroes dominated the comic book world. What follows are some random thoughts about the comics book industry in 2009. They are not in any particular order or topic. And they are all just my opinion and do not reflect the opinions of Westfield or anyone else. So away we go.
Since December is the time of the season for gift giving, I thought this time around I would recommend a few books that would make great gifts for any fan of comics books, strips, or reading. These are in no particular order, but I would highly recommend any of them to any comic book fan.
Mark Waid is one of the most popular writers in comics today. Among his many credits are memorable runs on DC’s The Brave & The Bold and Flash, and Marvel’s Fantastic Four and Captain America. Currently, he’s one of the writers on Amazing Spider-Man and he’s the Editor-In-Chief at Boom! Studios where he writes new adventures of Pixar’s The Incredibles as well as several creator-owned books. This month, he chronicles the new adventures of Stephen Strange, formerly Dr. Strange, in Marvel’s Strange. Westfield’s Roger Ash recently got in touch with Waid to learn more about this mini-series.
