Tom:

Thanks for the further information on the Korvac epilogue. I had wondered about this, as the epilogue was so heavy-handed and so ill-fitting for the story. I always thought the story needed an epilogue -- was always disappointed with the one we got.

There is a brief note in the book that the epilogue was added for the first collection and included here “for the sake of completeness.” It’s unfortunate that your explanation couldn’t have been included as well.

Thad:

You are probably correct in stating that the alternate universe thing was a external retro-fit after the story was published. The story itself has Songbird thinking and reacting as if she is from the same timeline as the rest of the characters. But the cool thing about comics and time-travel stories in particular (which also makes them hell to write about) is that someone will eventually come along and make this a storypoint in Avengers Forever 2 (or 5.7, or whatever -- but you get the idea).

It’s unfortunate that Kurt didn’t get a chance to make Songbird’s membership “official” during his Avengers run. She would have made a great Avenger. And who’s to say that it couldn’t happen sometime in the future? Stranger things have happened... For years, I never thought that there would ever be a “real” JLA/Avengers story drawn by George Pérez, either.

Just a quick clarification about that epilogue: I didn't drop it out in later reprintings because I thought it was unnecessary, I dropped it out because it undermines the fundamental principles of the story that came immediately before it. This was not Mark Gruenwald's finest hour, much as I love Mark, and may have been motivated by the difficulties of his dealings with former EIC Jim Shooter as anything else. It honestly feels to me like a bunch of other guys taking the stage in the last five minutes to piss on the work of the guys who immediately preceded them. We included it here (hopefully with some sort of editorial note indicating that it was created years later) so that this collection would be complete for those who care about such things.

"From slightly further in the future (and from an alternate universe) comes Songbird, whom the present-day Hank and Jan know only as being a member of the (then) villainous Thunderbolts."

Been awhile since I read it, but...Kurt didn't WRITE her as being "from an alternate universe", did he? He actually intended to have her join the team at some point. It only became "alternate" a few years later when Bendis took the team in a completely different direction (and Nicieza killed off Genis-Vell).
