Joshua Ortega is the writer of such books as DC/WildStorm‘s Gears of War and Image‘s Frank Frazetta’s Death Dealer. This month, his new project, Queen Sonja, comes to you from Dynamite Entertainment. Westfield’s Roger Ash recently contacted Ortega to learn more about the book.

Westfield: What attracted you to the Queen Sonja project?

Joshua Ortega: The character of Red Sonja, her history and her legacy, and the chance to do something wholly unique… as a kid, I loved King Conan, and it’s great to have a chance to tell a story about Sonja’s ascension to the throne. To be a queen or a monarch is a huge responsibility, and I’m really looking forward to exploring her challenges, triumphs, and victories.

Westfield: Is this a good jumping on point for people who are unfamiliar with Red Sonja?

Ortega: Yeah, definitely… we want to make sure that people can pick up Issue #1 and get right into the story.

Westfield: What can people look forward to in the series? Anything you can say about the story

Ortega: Can’t really say too much at this stage, but we really want folks to enjoy the story, and we’ll make sure to give them stories that are action-packed and memorable.

Westfield: You’re working with artist Mel Rubi on the book. Are you enjoying your collaboration?

Ortega: No doubt, Mel is an incredibly talented individual, and I’m honored to be working with someone of his caliber.

Westfield: Any closing comments you’d like to make?

Ortega: Sure, check out Queen Sonja later this year, and let us know what you think of the first few issues.
