Beauology 101: Call Me Maybe

“Girls Do Make Passes at Beau Smith Wearing Glasses”

With the “advancement” of technology, I don’t get to talk with my friends, fellow comic book readers, creators, and pop culture participators as much as I used to. The main reason is that everyone seems to prefer Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and texting more for communication. I use them, don’t get me wrong, but they are not my preferred choices for conversation.

No one seems to have time to talk the fun stuff anymore, but they sure seem to have an endless amount of time to sit and type it all out. I don’t know about you, but unless someone is paying me, I don’t like to write for free. It’s my job and like any job, I like to get paid.

I kinda miss that one on one exchange of talking pop culture and comics. I truly do enjoy hearing what my friends have to say about certain subjects like film, TV, comics, music, and the like. I may not always agree, but that’s what makes it interesting as long as everybody minds their manners.

So, this week here in Beauology 101 class, I’m gonna talk and you get to listen…or read. Sure, you can comment, but there’s no promise that I’ll get right back to you because technology is kinda slow in that back and forth method of conversation. See, I miss the phone stuff already.

So….Let’s talk.

The Guardians Of The Galaxy Movie

The Guardians Of The Galaxy Movie

** Marvel Comics’s new film, Guardians Of The Galaxy looks to be a lot of fun and a visual treat. Me, I’m looking forward to it. I think the casting was really smart and is going to be a major part of what’s going to make this movie. Am I sorry it doesn’t have all the original ideas of the original series and related comic book series? No. They were okay, but like a lot of Marvel movies, I think this is going to be better than the comic book.

** Batman v Superman movie. Personally, I didn’t care for any of the Tim Burton Batman films at all. I was never really a fan of the Christopher Reeve Superman films (no disrespect to the late Mr. Reeve). The last two Superman movies left me cold, but I did enjoy the Christopher Nolan Batman films. As far as the upcoming Batman v. Superman, well, I really think there’s a lot riding on this. If DC cannot pull off a winner, or even a likable film, then they are in some movie making trouble, possibly as much as they are with their current superhero comics. Ben Affleck has stirred up some gripes as Batman. I think that it doesn’t really matter. Christian Bale has been the best Bruce Wayne/Batman yet; his boots are going to be hard to fill. If Affleck can pull this off, then great. I’m all for that. I just don’t think he has the likability factor as an actor that he does as a writer and director.

Something I think this film desperately will need is some humor. I don’t mean slapstick or camp, I mean human-related humor that we all use and receive in our everyday lives. For this film to work, the emotions cannot be constipated. This film is also a possible springboard for the Wonder Woman character. They are going to have to do with her what they did with The Hulk in The Avengers movie by making her likable. She will need to steal every scene she’s in. The other secret is that she can’t be in every scene. They are going to have to hit home runs with every scene she’s in, but they are going to have to be prudent about the amount of screen time she gets. Leave them wanting more…much more. This film is going to be a tough row to hoe. They have a real job ahead of them. I really hope they pull it off because I would love to see more DC characters on screen and for that screen time to be enjoyable for me as a viewer.

The Green Lantern Movie

The Green Lantern Movie

** Green Lantern Movie: In case you were wondering; no, I didn’t like it. I wanted to, but it was like a wonderful plate of spaghetti; it looked tasty on the plate, but then somebody spilled it on the floor and it became a mess. It was too much crammed into too much CGI with too many characters nobody cared anything about. Ryan Reynolds was perfectly cast, but they took him and tossed him into an insane asylum. Nobody got out alive.

Captain America Movie

Captain America Movie

** Captain America Films. They could do no wrong. Really enjoyed them.

The Iron Man Movie

The Iron Man Movie

** Iron Man Films: The first was the best, the rest were good.

** X-Men Films: Have enjoyed them all. X-Men First Class was the best by far. I also enjoyed the first Wolverine film more than the second. I see a long run for more X-Men movies no matter who stars in them.

** Jonah Hex: Had high hopes, but they almost went Will Smith Wild, Wild West bad on me. A waste of Josh Brolin in a western as well as Jonah Hex as a character.

The Thor Movie

The Thor Movie

** Thor films: Like the comics, always good until he returns to Asgard, then it gets boring and too CGI quick. Keep him on Earth and it’s all good with me.

** Fantastic Four films: I liked them. I had no problems with them and found them to be great family films. By that I mean ones where the whole family could watch them together. Fitting for the first family of Marvel Comics.

**Spider-Man Movies: I guess I just know the story too well to be interested. None of them turned my crank. It was like Jeff Bridges in True Grit; the movie was great, true to the book and respectful to the John Wayne version (which was not his best film), but I had already seen it, if you know what I mean. Way too much teen angst for my personal taste. Villains were poorly done in my opinion; too over the top.

Just an added note, I’m tired of seeing Samuel Jackson in every movie. He’s becoming a one trick pony that I don’t wanna ride.

Okay, we’ve talked. Wasn’t that fun? Oh, that’s right, I didn’t let you get a word in edge-wise. Sorry. I guess you’ll have to post up comments here on the cave wall and play verbal volleyball with me.

See, if we were talking on the phone, you could’ve hung up on me a long time ago…like when you saw my name on the caller I.D.

I miss talking to you.
